Not all leather patches are the same material, and the difference matters for both look and longevity. We offer two main options:
- Genuine leather: Full-grain or top-grain cowhide. Ages naturally, develops a patina, holds debossed and laser-engraved detail extremely well. Best for premium hats, leather goods, and gift items where the material story is part of the point.
- Faux leather (PU): More consistent in color and texture, slightly easier to attach to synthetic fabrics, and lower cost per patch. Works well for workwear, team gear, and branded merchandise where durability matters but the "it's real leather" detail doesn't.
For most hat patches — the most common ask we get — genuine leather with laser engraving is what customers end up with. The laser burns the design directly into the surface, leaving a permanent, high-contrast mark that doesn't crack, peel, or fade the way ink does. (A sewn-on embroidered patch over leather is also possible, but most people who specifically want leather patches are after the clean, engraved aesthetic.)

Sizing, Shape, and What Your File Needs to Look Like
Standard hat patches run around 2" x 3.5" or 1.75" x 3", but we're not locked into stock sizes. Custom die-cut shapes — your logo outline, a state of Idaho silhouette, a shield, a circular badge — are all on the table. More complex die-cut shapes add a small amount to the per-unit cost, but not dramatically.
For laser-engraved patches, the best files are high-contrast vector artwork: .AI, .EPS, or a clean .PDF. A sharp .PNG at 300 DPI or higher works too, especially for simpler logos. If your file is a blurry screenshot from your website, we'll tell you before we run anything. (We'd rather have a quick back-and-forth on the file than deliver something that doesn't look like your logo.)
Embroidered patches on a leather or faux-leather base also work — we digitize in-house, and digitizing is free on your first run. That's not a limited-time offer, it's just our standard pricing.
Turnaround and Pricing — Real Numbers
Standard turnaround for leather patches is 5–7 business days from approved artwork. Rush production (24–48 hours) is available on most patch orders depending on current shop volume — reach out before you order if you're working against a hard deadline.
Pricing varies by material, size, quantity, and finish, but a realistic ballpark for small quantities:
- A single 2" x 3.5" laser-engraved genuine leather patch: roughly $12–$18 depending on shape complexity.
- A run of 12: per-unit cost drops noticeably, usually into the $6–$10 range.
- 50+: per-unit cost continues to fall, and that's typically where hat brands or larger teams are landing.

How Patches Get Attached
This is where customers sometimes have questions they didn't know to ask. Leather patches can be attached a few different ways depending on what they're going onto:
- Sew-on: The most permanent option. We can sew them onto hats, jackets, or bags in-shop if you're local to Meridian or the Boise area.
- Iron-on backing: Heat-activated adhesive on the back. Works on most fabrics, though we'd recommend sewing around the edge on items that get heavy use or regular washing.
- Velcro backing: Popular for tactical gear, morale patches, bags, and anything where you want the patch to be removable or swappable.
- Adhesive backing: For hard goods — notebooks, phone cases, helmets, gear boxes.
