Boise's adult hockey community is small, loyal, and serious about uniform identity. If you're starting a new beer league team or refreshing your existing kit, the jersey design isn't just about looking good — it's a statement of who your team is and how seriously (or not) you take yourselves. Here's the unwritten guide to beer league hockey jersey design we've assembled from years of producing them.
Team name philosophy — funny vs. serious
Beer league team names fall into three categories:
Pun-based / funny: Most beer league teams. Examples we've printed: 'Ice Hole', 'Lord Stanley's Cup Of Coffee', 'Plays-Inn-The-Trapezoid', 'Old & Slow'. Pun-based names signal the team takes itself lightly, which is the actual beer league ethos.
Honest old-school: Some teams just name themselves after the bar or restaurant that sponsors them. 'Mulligans Hockey', 'Hawkins Pub Hockey', etc. Honest, recognizable, marketing for the sponsor.
Tough / try-hard: Teams that took themselves too seriously and bought into the 'Devils', 'Predators', 'Sharks' aesthetic. These teams usually lose to the pun-based ones because the puns relax everyone.
Nicknames on the back — the beer league signature
Beer league jerseys almost universally use NICKNAMES instead of last names on the back. We print nicknames as if they're last names — no extra setup fee, just send the roster with each player's nickname.
Common nickname categories: hockey-themed ('Wheels', 'Mitts', 'Sniper'), dad-bod self-deprecating ('Beer Belly', 'Slow Steve', 'Two-Beer Tom'), or job-themed ('Doc', 'Cap', 'Sparky').
Sponsor logos — almost always
The sponsor is usually a bar, restaurant, or local business that's helping fund the team. Standard placement: primary sponsor center-front (often with team name above it), secondary sponsors on the sleeves or back.
For 'we sponsor ourselves' teams (no external funding), the front becomes the team logo or pun name, with maybe an in-joke logo on the sleeve.
Color and design choices
Most beer league jerseys are sublimated, not embroidered. Sublimation handles bold patterns and full-color art that screen print and embroidery struggle with. Common design choices:
- NHL throwback look: A direct visual quote of a 1970s–80s NHL team's jersey, with your team name swapped in
- Bar logo throwback: The sponsor bar's logo blown up as the jersey crest
- Original design: A custom mascot or design specific to the team's identity
Sock sets matter for the look
Matching socks complete the kit. Sublimated team-color socks usually cost $18–$28 per pair, same lead time as jerseys. Most beer league teams order socks as part of the jersey kit — they're more visible at the rink than people realize.
Replacement jerseys mid-season
A teammate breaks his stick, throws it, hits another player. That player wants to retaliate. He's also out of position for the next 3 shifts. You know the type. We can produce a single replacement jersey for the player matching your existing kit in 5–10 business days. No setup fee on the reorder.

How We Make This Stuff
Everything covered in this post is produced in our Meridian, Idaho shop at 2700 E Lanark St. Eagle Ridge Apparel is a family-run print shop serving the Treasure Valley since 2019 — we embroider, screen print, DTF, sublimate, laser-cut leather patches, laser-engrave drinkware, and UV-print promotional goods on equipment we operate ourselves. No outsourced decoration, no overseas fulfillment, no third-party middlemen.
Most custom apparel orders ship in 7–10 business days from approved mockup. Rush production in 3–5 business days is available on most decoration methods; embroidered hats are the tightest constraint. We hold no minimums on any decoration type — order one piece or one thousand — though pricing scales aggressively over 50, 100, and 250-piece tiers. Free digital mockups before production starts. We don't begin a run until you sign off on what it'll look like.
Two ways to order: design it yourself online in our designer tool (any quantity, any decoration method), or request a custom quote and we'll send back pricing within one business day. Talk to a real person at (208) 954-9492 or info@eagleridgeapparel.com — most inquiries get a response within two hours during the business day.
