Quick answerSoccer jersey numbers for youth and club teams follow one firm rule — the goalkeeper wears #1, #00, or another single-digit — and after that, players pick whatever number hasn't been claimed yet, often a birthday digit or a favorite pro's number. The traditional 1–11 positional system is essentially gone at the recreational and club level, so the smarter move is collecting each player's first choice and a backup before you place the order. At Eagle Ridge Apparel in Meridian, ID, we print full 18-player youth soccer kits with no minimums, and getting the number roster sorted before you reach out is the single thing that cuts turnaround time in half.
Every spring we get a wave of coaches coming in right before the Idaho Premier League showcase dates — somebody's scrambling to get 18 jerseys ordered and hasn't figured out the numbers yet. So here's the actual cheat sheet: the traditional 1–11 convention, how modern youth and club teams handle it in practice, and the three things you need to ask players before you lock an order so you're not re-emailing parents for a week.
The traditional convention (and why it's mostly dead)
The classic 1–11 system maps to a 4-3-3 formation: goalkeeper #1, fullbacks #2 and #3, center backs #4 and #5, midfielders #6, #7, #8, forwards #9, #10, #11. Pro clubs still follow loose versions of it, though Lionel Messi wore #19 for a full season at Barcelona, so even the pros bend it.
For youth and amateur soccer? It's basically gone. Players pick numbers based on personal meaning, a favorite pro's number, or honestly just whatever nobody else grabbed first. Don't fight it.
What modern youth and club soccer actually does
- Goalkeeper: Almost always #1, #00, or another single-digit. This is the one position where tradition holds.
- Field players: Anywhere from #2 to #99. Most clubs let players request their preferred number and keep a roster spreadsheet to prevent duplicates.
- Common picks: Birthday digits (a player born September 7th picks #97 or #07), current age (an 11-year-old picks #11), or a favorite pro — Messi fans want #10, Ronaldo fans want #7.
- Reserved numbers: Some clubs hold specific numbers for captains or key positions. Check with your league before you assume those are open.
The three questions coaches forget to ask
When you collect numbers from players, ask all three of these at once — not one at a time over three emails.
- What number do you want?
- What's your backup if someone else already claimed it?
- Do you want your last name on the back? (Yes or no.)
Send a Google Form. Give players 48 hours to respond. Lock the numbers. (We've seen coaches go back and forth with parents for two weeks over this — a simple form fixes it every time.)
League rules that override player preference
Some leagues have hard rules, and they'll DQ a player over a jersey that doesn't comply. Idaho Premier League requires unique numbers 1–99 with no duplicates league-wide at showcase events. NSCAA has rules about player name height on the back — under 4 inches. Some indoor leagues cap numbers at two digits.
Check the rules before you place the order. We've reprinted jerseys for teams that missed a league requirement, and it's not a fun conversation to have two days before a tournament.
Numbers on shorts and warm-ups
For club teams playing actual tournaments: yes on the shorts. A number on the front-left at 4–5 inches should match the jersey. For rec teams, you can skip it and save $8–$12 per kit. That adds up fast on a 20-player roster.
Warm-up jackets are different. Usually no number on those — just team name and player name. Warm-ups are about identity, not identification on the field.

How much does a custom youth soccer jersey cost?
Pricing depends on blank choice, decoration method, and quantity, but a typical sublimated or screen-printed youth jersey through Eagle Ridge runs in the range most club budgets expect with no minimum order requirement. Reach out for a same-day quote on your specific roster size.
What information do I need before ordering numbered soccer jerseys?
Collect each player's first-choice number, a backup number in case of duplicates, and whether they want a name on the back — asking all three at once in a single parent email saves at least three rounds of back-and-forth before you can lock the order.
Can Eagle Ridge do a rush order for a soccer team in Boise?
Eagle Ridge prints and embroiders in Meridian, ID, and same-day rush is available on most in-stock items, so Treasure Valley teams with a showcase deadline aren't stuck waiting on a distant vendor.
How We Make This Stuff
Everything covered in this post is produced in our Meridian, Idaho shop at 2700 E Lanark St. Eagle Ridge Apparel is a family-run print shop serving the Treasure Valley since 2019 — we embroider, screen print, DTF, sublimate, laser-cut leather patches, laser-engrave drinkware, and UV-print promotional goods on equipment we operate ourselves. No outsourced decoration, no overseas fulfillment, no third-party middlemen.
Most custom apparel orders ship in 7–10 business days from approved mockup. Rush production in 3–5 business days is available on most decoration methods; embroidered hats are the tightest constraint. We hold no minimums on any decoration type — order one piece or one thousand — though pricing scales aggressively over 50, 100, and 250-piece tiers. Free digital mockups before production starts. We don't begin a run until you sign off on what it'll look like.
Two ways to order: design it yourself online in our designer tool (any quantity, any decoration method), or request a custom quote and we'll send back pricing within one business day. Talk to a real person — email info@eagleridgeapparel.com or send us a message, and most inquiries get a response within two hours during the business day.
