Most high school track programs order one batch of singlets and assume all athletes can wear them. That works in theory but creates real problems when a sprinter and a distance runner have completely different singlet needs. Here's the practical breakdown of how to spec track singlets for the different events on your roster.
Sprinter singlets — closer cut
Sprinter singlets are athletically-fit, tighter to the body, and made of lighter mesh. The cut sits closer to the chest and waist so there's no fabric flap during the 100-meter dash. Often sublimated in a single bold school color with simple branding.
Typical per-piece cost at team quantities (10+): $30–$45.
Distance singlets — slightly looser, more breathable
Distance singlets prioritize breathability for races lasting 8+ minutes. The cut is slightly looser, the back panel is often a different mesh weave than the front (allows heat exhaust), and the front-chest area has more space for the event labeling some programs use.
Typical per-piece cost: $32–$48 depending on blank.
Field event athletes — the most-overlooked group
Throwers (shot put, discus) and jumpers (long, high, triple) don't always fit the sprinter or distance singlet cuts well — throwers especially have larger torso builds than the singlet sizes account for.
For throwing events, consider sizing UP from the standard chart. For high jumpers, the standard distance cut usually works.
Sublimation handles all of these
Sublimated team-color singlets is the standard. School colors matched, individual roster sizing, event labels (sprint, distance, throws) added to the front or sleeve at no extra cost. Sublimated singlets hold up to entire seasons of meets, washing, and storage.
Warm-up gear — almost more important than the singlet
Track meets are cold. Athletes warm up for 30–45 minutes before their event, then go back to standing around. Warm-up gear is critical:
- Warm-up jackets — full-zip, embroidered with school crest. $35–$65 per piece.
- Warm-up pants — match the jacket. $25–$45.
- Travel hoodies — for meet days, especially away meets at high-altitude tracks (Bogus Basin / McCall area). $25–$45.
Meet-day travel + supporter merch
For travel meets, embroidered team duffel bags with athlete name + event ($35–$55) help organize the team. Parent + booster supporter tees in school colors round out the booster fundraising side.
